Senior Lifestyle & Wellness Editor at berncroft Ltd
14 years building community dance programmes for active seniors across Ireland. From weekly socials in Cork to Galway retreat experiences, I've helped hundreds of retirees rediscover movement, friendship, and purpose.
Back in 2010, I was volunteering with Age Action Ireland and kept hearing the same thing from older adults: they wanted to move, to dance, to feel alive. But there weren't many spaces designed for them. Not really. Most dance classes felt either too young or too clinical.
That gap bothered me. So in 2012, after finishing my diploma in Adult Education at University College Cork, I decided to do something about it. I started small — a weekly dance social in Cork city centre with about a dozen people. No performance pressure, no judgement. Just good music, good instruction, and the chance to connect with others who were hungry for the same thing.
Within three years, we'd grown to over 80 regular participants. People weren't just learning steps. They were finding confidence, friendship, purpose. I watched the transformation happen week after week. That's when I knew this was what I was meant to do.
The work expanded. I spent years developing programmes across Munster and Connacht, learning what actually works for active retirees — the practical stuff, the evidence-based approaches, the community dynamics. In 2018, I launched the Galway Dance Retreat programme. Now it hosts 60+ participants annually, drawing people from across Ireland. We've grown beyond just dance. We're creating spaces where people feel seen, capable, and excited about what comes next.
Today at berncroft Ltd, I oversee content and educational resources for Ireland's active retired population. But the core mission hasn't changed. Retirement isn't the end of vitality. It's an opportunity to rediscover it.
Built on 14 years of real-world experience and ongoing research in gerontology and community wellness
Designing inclusive, accessible dance initiatives that prioritise social connection and physical wellness over performance. I've built sustainable programmes from scratch and scaled them across multiple regions.
Running consistent, welcoming social dance events that keep people coming back. I understand the logistics, the psychology, and the practical details that make weekly gatherings feel like genuine community.
Teaching partner and solo dance styles specifically adapted for mature learners. I've trained instructors, developed curriculum, and created pathways for absolute beginners to reach genuine competence and confidence.
Creating immersive, transformative experiences that combine intensive dance instruction with wellness, relaxation, and peer connection. My Galway retreats have become flagship events across Ireland.
Understanding the physical, cognitive, and emotional needs of active retirees. I've published research on community dance's impact on cognitive health and regularly speak at Irish Active Ageing forums.
Developing educational resources that make movement accessible and appealing to retirees. At berncroft Ltd, I oversee strategy for reaching Ireland's active retired population with authentic, practical guidance.
I've watched people walk into their first dance class at 65, 70, even 80 years old, convinced they're too old to learn. Six months later, they're leading socials and telling their friends to join. The potential doesn't diminish with age. It just gets redirected. Retirement isn't when vitality ends — it's when it gets to flourish on your own terms.
Don't get me wrong — I'm serious about teaching proper technique. But the real magic happens when people feel genuinely welcomed and part of something. A perfect spin that leaves you isolated isn't nearly as valuable as a slightly wobbly step shared with someone who makes you laugh. Community comes first.
I rely on research — neuroscience tells us why dance is so powerful for cognitive health, why rhythm and movement unlock memories and joy. But research alone isn't enough. You've got to understand what people actually need, what scares them, what makes them feel alive. That comes from listening and watching.
Every programme I design starts with: How do we make this genuinely accessible? Not just physically, though that matters. Accessible to people with zero dance experience. To people who've lost confidence. To people who think dance "isn't for them." If it's not accessible to the people who need it most, it's not a real solution.
Recognised the significant gap in accessible social dance opportunities for older adults and began exploring solutions within community organisations.
Completed formal qualification in adult learning, programme design, and community education. Founded the first structured weekly dance social in Cork city centre with 12 initial participants.
Grew the programme from 12 to over 80 regular participants through consistent quality, inclusive approach, and strong community building. Expanded programming across Munster region.
Developed flagship immersive retreat experience combining intensive dance instruction with wellness and social connection. Now hosts 60+ participants annually from across Ireland.
Oversee content strategy and educational resources for leisure and lifestyle programming aimed at Ireland's active retired population. Published research on community dance and cognitive health. Regular speaker at Irish Active Ageing forums.
